Upholstery Made Simple

Upholstery made simple

The initial idea for Upholstery Made Simple, was formed whilst Alan was teaching in one of the many classes he runs as Dorset Chairman School of Upholstery. One of his students asked ‘is there an easier way to do this, why can’t upholstery be made simple?’ This led Alan to research what was available online, if anything, but it all appeared to be very textbook and staid. Alan’s style of teaching is very relaxed and fun, as his many students would attest to.

Research has shown you learn far more when you enjoy what you’re learning.

Having run numerous weekend workshops, teaching how to make footstools and upholster them, which wasHexy footstool with retro legs enormous fun for both Alan and his students, the model for Upholstery Made Simple started to form. It was obvious at that point that not everyone has the aspiration to become a Master Upholsterer, some just want to try a new hobby, or want to try something new and for the sense of achievement they feel at the end, having produced an original piece of Upholstered furniture that could take pride of place in their home. What a conversation starter.

One evening over dinner, Alan discussed his idea with his wife and business partner, Wendy, ‘can you make it simple?‘ she asked. That was the point when the model for Upholstery Made Simple became a reality. People having fun, creating something original and learning new skills, all without having to leave their home or pay course fees for the privilege.
